As an Independent Community Activist, I have been dealing directly with Council officials for years and I have an intimate knowledge of the workings of local government.

THE ROLE OF A COUNCILLOR: Councillors have very little power, except when it comes to striking the rate and the buying & selling of Public property, which requires a majority vote in the Council Chambers. You may remember the sale of land that was part of the Peoples Park to private developers and the demolition of Roxboro swimming pool and the subsequent sale of that land for €10 million. These were disgraceful examples of Councillors toeing the party line.
The only other power that Councillors have is their voice.
